The Manchester Fiction Prize

The second Manchester Fiction Prize was launched in the spring of 2011 and, by the closing date of 12th August, had attracted almost 1,900 entries from 45 countries.

The judges – distinguished short-story writers John Burnside, Alison MacLeod and Nicholas Royle – were thrilled with the overall variety and quality of the writing – so much so that they asked to extend the short-list from the usual six to eight, and also commended a further 30 stories as close contenders. The winners were announced at a gala prize-giving ceremony at Chetham's School of Music on Friday 14th October. This event formed part of the 2011 Manchester Literature Festival, and featured readings from all three judges and each of the eight short-listed stories before the £10,000 prize was awarded. The next Manchester Fiction Prize will be launched in early 2013; the 2012 Prize will be for poetry.
